The First World War (1914-18) is a defining moment in world history. Never before had a conflict been fought on such a destructive and widespread scale. The war to end all wars claimed the lives of almost 1 million British Empire troops, it led to the deaths of over 15 million people world wide and it led directly to the Second World War which was even more catastrophic.

This website aims to show how the First World War left its mark on Sunderland during the period of 1914-19. Within these web pages details can be found of key dates, events and personalities unique to the Wearside area.

It aims to acknowledge and pay tribute to the bravery of the men, women and children whose lives were cut short by this terrible conflict.

The 28 minute documentary film (to the right) depicts how Sunderland was impacted during the First World War. There are interviews with historians telling the story of local men and women who served their country. The film also covers Wearside military units, VAD hospitals, the zeppelin attack, shipbuilding and the peace parade.
